School History

James Wyatt Oates (1797-1877), was an early settler in Texas, known for establishing one of the state's first schools in his home, Oates Prairie.  Oates Elementary is in an industrial neighborhood in the east side of Houston.  The current building of Oates Elementary was erected in 1937 and in 1958 a west wing was added to the building.  Oates elementary is a Title I school committed to serving the community, empowering students, and developing future leaders.  Oates Elementary serves 280 students in grades PK-5th grade.
